Having an electrocardiogram (ECG) done

An overview of the ECG information leaflet from the Lothian Metabolic Antenatal Clinic

As part of your antenatal care with the Metabolic Clinic you are asked to have an ECG carried out before your 28 week appointment. An ECG is a test which records the electrical activity and rhythm of your heart. Pregnancy can place additional stress on your body and this test helps to check that your heart is healthy.

The test is completely painless and involves undressing from the waist up and wearing a hospital gown. The cardiographers will put some small sticky pads which detect electrical impulses onto your ankles, wrists and chest and run the test. The test will not hurt or harm you or your baby.

The test will be done at the ECG section of Out Patient Department 3 (OPD3) at the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh. OPD3 is open from 9.00am to 5.00pm Monday to Thursday and from 9.00am to 4.30pm on Friday. It is a drop in clinic, you just turn up and wait your turn. You probably won’t have to wait for longer than half an hour, and the test itself should not take longer than five minutes.

OPD3 is near to the main reception desk in the main mall of the hospital – turn right as you come through the front door.

Please take your blue maternity notes and the ECG referral slip with you to the test. You will be given the ECG referral slip at your first Metabolic Antenatal Clinic appointment.

Please attend for your ECG before your 28 week appointment at the Metabolic Clinic (you can do this earlier on the same day) and attend the Metabolic Clinic for review after having both your ECG and Growth Scan.

Thank you.
