Seven years

This visit will be similar to earlier visits; your child will be asked to play games, answer questions, and complete a brain scan.

Essentials

  • It would be a single visit to the Edinburgh Imaging Facility at the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh; this is the same place where you brought your child for a scan for earlier parts of the study.
  • Your child will be asked to play games, answer questions, and complete a MRI brain scan.  We will also collect a sample of their spit.  We will ask you to complete some questionnaires and finally, ask if we can send two questionnaires to your child’s teacher about your child’s development at school.
  • We have created a short movie to help children prepare for the scan visit at the 5-year timepoint. The scan visit at the 7-year timepoint is a little different - you will only come in for a single visit, and you won't go in our pretend scanner. But we have included a link to the movie here, to help remind you and your child about what having an MRI with us is like [https://media.ed.ac.uk/media/PRENCOG_5%20YEAR%20OLD%20APPOINTMENT_ANIMATION/1_akzmmsc4 ].
  • For your participation in this study you will receive a £20 gift card and a picture of your child’s brain.

What

We will ask you and your child to visit us at the Edinburgh Imaging Facility at the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh; this is the same place where you brought your child for a scan for earlier parts of the study.  When you arrive, a member of the research team will explain to you and your child what will happen during the visit.  You will be asked to sign a consent form.  During the visit we will ask your child to try the following tasks:

  1. MRI Scan (up to an hour).  Before entering the scanner room, we will make sure your child’s clothing does not contain any metal. If necessary, your child can change clothes before entering the scanner room.  During the MRI scan, your child will watch movies on a screen. Your child may listen to voices and music through headphones. Your child will be inside the MRI scanner for up to an hour, as long as he or she is comfortable. A researcher will stand next to your child during the scan.

  1. Behavioural Testing and questionnaires, up to two and a quarter hours. Using these measures, we try to understand how your child acts, thinks, or solves a problem. Behavioural testing does not involve brain imaging. Your child will complete this testing on a computer or seated at a table. Your child will be asked to complete social and non-social tasks. These tasks will involve paying attention to pictures, stories, toys, or videos. Your child may be asked to remember or think about the material and answer questions about it.

  1. We will ask to measure your child’s height and weight. We will also ask to collect a sample of your child’s saliva. The saliva sample will take five to ten minutes to collect and is done using a mouth swab sample kit, similar to a cotton wool bud being placed just inside the cheek.

A person’s “genetic make-up” may be defined as the molecules in our bodies that we inherit from our parents, which help determine who we are, and how our body grows and develops. This information is held in a ‘code’ that exists in the cells of our body, called DNA. The exact way in which that code works is influenced by another set of molecules in each cell called the epigenome. We want to study how the epigenome changes as children grow up.

We will ask you to complete some questionnaires. First, we will also ask you to complete some paper questionnaires during the visit while your child is in the scanner and will take about fifty five minutes to complete. Second, we will ask you to complete some additional questionnaires online at a time that suits you and will take about an hour in total to complete.

Finally, we will ask if we can send two questionnaires to your child’s teacher about your child’s development at school. They will take ten minutes in total to complete and we will post them out direct to the school, with your permission.

The total time for the visit may be up to four and a half hours. This includes a break for lunch/snacks.
